YR15 (Yep Roc Records 15th Anniversary Show with Nick Lowe, Robyn Hitchcock, Los Straitjackets, Dave Alvin, Chuck Prophet, etc.)

Yep Roc Records threw itself a well-deserved 15th anniversary party with 3 nights of concerts at Cat's Cradle in Carrboro, NC. These are from the first night's show on October 11, 2012. I couldn't attend the other 2 nights. Have to mention that the sound and lighting was great at the Cat's Cradle - awesome place to see a show - and the show moved along in amazingly efficient manner given the number of performers. Congrats to Yep Roc on a great show and 15 years of great music.

  • After Jukebox the Ghost left the stage, The Chorus Project came back out and brought down the house with a moving version of Nick Lowe's "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love, and Understanding." The singer on the microphone did a great job with the lead vocal. I'm sure Nick has heard a ton of versions of his song, but I wonder what he thought of this one if he saw it. (I figure he'd be mighty impressed and touched - he seems like a pretty good guy.)

  • Eugene Mirman came up for a funny few minutes. Saw him in the crowd later digging the show. The members of Southern Culture on the Skids, who live nearby and had played the opening party the night before, were also in attendance but didn't play unfortunately. Not that there was really time for it, but they're always entertaining. It was fun watching Rick (singer/guitarist) grooving to Los Straitjackets' guitar heroics when they came on.

  • Nick Lowe having as much fun as the audience (and we were having a lot of fun). And he played "I Knew the Bride (When She Used to Rock 'n' Roll)" which made everybody very happy. It would have been great seeing him plug in with a full band, but he's such an appealing performer and his songs so good that it didn't matter. (And the same went for the night's other singer/songwriter/guitarists.)

  • The volume cranked up when Los Straitjackets (Eddie Angel pictured) took the stage for a short set of instrumental gems before bringing earlier performers back onstage to sing with them.

  • "Ritz Carlton" (aka Ian Carlton of Knyghts of Fuzz and the Lustre Kings) led Los Straitjackets through a rousing version of "River Deep, Mountain High." Think Bill Murray's SNL-era lounge singer but with tons more energy and better singing.
